Nankin Tamasudare Performance at the ICLS Japanese Chat MeetUp

17 Apr 2018

The weekly Japanese Chat evening on Tueday 17 April was treated to a cultural feast in the form of a performance of Nankin Tamasudare by Mr Tanaka Kanji.

Tanaka san, in traditional costume, wowed the audience with his manipulation of the mat  of bamboo sticks into many wonderful shapes; a tradition which. dates back to the Edo period in Japan.

The performance was accompanied by a poetic commentary which is a part of the ritual and the audience joined in when required with rhythmic  hand-clapping.

A good time was enjoyed by the 45 chat attendees and ended with a display of plate spinning, joined by several of the audience, some of whom proved to be quite skilled. Please see our attached photos.
